Sunbeam Cottage, Midlothian

Utilising a neglected rear courtyard space of an existing charming cottage, an airy, open plan extension has been formed that compliments the existing home as well as rejuvenates the street upon which it is situated.

Our Client's brief was to form a unique, spacious and light-filled open plan living space to their existing home. Created by extending the existing offshoot to the street and forming a modern flat roofed zinc extension to the side, the overall proposal sympathetically infills the former courtyard with a building that works with the home and context.

Enjoyed by our Client through large levels of natural light from above, the double height living space and kitchen are heated with a central stove. Both spaces feel spacious with the openings providing glimpses of the nearby woodland.

Double height living space connected to the cupola lit kitchen by a double sided stove using stone, slate and metal.
